Training Coaches and Kids

Thursday, July 26, 2007 - While Sooke played host to Celtic coaches Three Juan de Fuca U-10 players are getting ready for a trip to California.

It was quite a coup for Sooke's Dave Scott as he orchestrated A match made in soccer heaven. According to Jim Sinclair at the Sooke News Mirror

Sooke joined some elite company last week when three coaches from the world’s number five soccer team paid a visit. The coaches work for the famous Glasgow Celtic club – the very model and inspiration for the local lads.

Meanwhile three young lads from the Western Communities are going to attend the David Beckham Academy in Carson City California next month. Rick Stiebel reports in the Goldstream Gazette on the lucky Soccer kids Beckham-bound. What should be an interesting exprience for these players is something not really available in Canada: a taste of professionalism.

Gill’s mother, Angela Pollock, said kids get their own nameplate and locker and new gear at the academy.

“It gives them a sense of how pro players are treated,” she said.

Patrick Gawrys and his teammates are rightfully applauded in the latest Victoria News. Their drive for the top of the league was boosted with a 3-1 win over visiting Surrey that ensured United maintains lead.

The always physical Coast League game provided a challenge for the leagues top goalscorer.

After heading home the eventual winner from a seemingly impossible angle, and coming within inches of nailing his 14th goal of the season with an acrobatic bicycle kick, Gawrys later found himself on the sideline spitting out a mouthful of blood, having taken a stray Surrey cleat to the chops.
